Well this blog is definitely not about Chandigarh and its sectored nomenclature ;) . This blog is about the different unknown, unnamed paths that we come across in life. Very often we need to make decisions and choose the right path from a plethora of options. Each path leads us to a different adventure. Each path holds in it surprises with unseen and unpredictable events along its course. The choice of the path can either make one’s life or mar it. And once we choose a particular path and traverse on it we find that at the next junction we are again supposed to make a decision and choose from a myriad of unknown streets, alleys and paths. This process of selection and decision making, is continuous and eternal. At the end of it, if a person looks back upon his life, he can actually chart the entire route he has travelled to reach the point where he is currently standing. There would have been some good decisions taken and some bad. But then what matters the most is the end and not the means. If a person is happy at the end of it, then he can safely conclude that the route taken was the best route available for him and there should be no regrets whatsoever.

Personally, I am directionally impaired. In spite of having lived in my city for the last 25 years I still find it difficult to find a new place in an unknown area, even with the complete address in my hand. Now being the guy that I am I wonder how I would be able to take the right paths and chart my own route to happiness and contentment. And to think of it, where I stand today I believe that I have taken the right paths and made the right decisions because I have no regrets with what I am doing today and I am as happy as one could ever get. The question that I had was  “How on earth did I manage to do this?”

So I sat down to ponder over this aspect. And here is my theory of how I have been able to chart the course of my life so far and I guess this holds good for most of the people too. Seventy percent of the times the decisions we make are by instinct. These instincts are groomed by certain conditions and happenings that occur in our past and the goals and targets that we have set for ourselves in the future. These dominant factors which mould our instincts could be parental influence wherein the virtues of right versus wrong are taught to us, it could be from past learning wherein an experience from the past sends us a warning signal against choosing the wrong course or it could be from the experiences of others around us. Out of the remaining thirty percent, twenty percent of the times we choose our course based on advice received from our families, loved ones, friends and sometimes even foes. It’s always a good idea to back ones instinct with some sound advice from ones well wishers. Finally the last ten percent of the times our choices are made because we are compelled to take it, for various xyz reasons.

To conclude I would suggest that each one of us should keep our focus on choosing those paths in life which follow one constant thumb rule which is, make sure your decisions, don’t hurt anyone, is on the right side of the law, which will make others around you proud of you and which will not prick your conscience once you have chosen the path.

I know it’s easier said than done but then that’s the trick while living in a world where the streets have no name
